Where Are We Going?

Could not much of our suffering in life be curtailed by simply understanding the concept that self gratification could actually be delayed? We live in a world where we take what we want impulsively; most times at the expense of others. When we see something that we "feel" that we need, we simply take it without hesitation. Sure, we can choose to live life to the fullest; sucking every ounce of personal satisfaction from it, but at what cost to our future selves?

It pains me to hear someone say, "well we only get one life, so I might as well live it to the fullest". These are some of the least joyous people I meet and they never seem to find the true deeper joy they are seeking. Thier life mantra is the embodiment of selfishness, with little concern for others. If it is all about me, then what I do to you is not important. Unfortunately we see too many people in counseling that have been harmed by those with that very line of thinking. These people leave disaster in their wake and smile all the while doing it. Vanity of vanities!

But what if instead, self regulation of our current impulses was our goal, focused on something greater? Now those that think like this... are the gems to connect to.
